TIRE MARKINGS
Illustrated below are the tire markings most commonly seen on
US Department of Transportation (DOT) approved tires sold in the US
TIRE MARKINGS
In the diagram, the tire size is 225/50 R-16,
255 is its section width (tire width in mm). 50 is
its aspect ratio (ratio of sidewall height to tread
width). R denotes radial construction and 16 is
the wheel diameter (in inches).
UNIFORM TIRE QUALITY GRADING (UTQG) MARKING
Ratings of tire performance in three areas: tread wear,
traction, and temperature resistance. While traction
and temperature resistance ratings are specific
performance levels, the tread wear ratings are assigned
by the tire manufacturers following field testing and are
most accurate when comparing tires of the same brand.
ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT APPROVAL CODE
This a notation used by car manufacturers such as Ferrari
and Porsche to signify that the design and construction of
this tire meets their requirements for Original Equipment.
